SECOND ATHENSPIL RESEARCH EXCHANGE: MR. PANOUSOS

Our second Research Exchange meeting took place on Wednesday 11 May 18:00-19:30 at Athens PIL premises (47 Academias str., 3rd floor) and online (via zoom).

We had the pleasure to hear from Mr. Dimitris Panousos, postgraduate researcher at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, who presented a research paper produced in the context of the course on “International Humanitarian Law” of the LL.M. in International and European Law.

Mr. Panousos’ paper, titled “The HMS Defender Incident: a gap in the law of neutrality?”, argues about the continued applicability of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in times of war as well as analyses its interplay with the law of naval warfare and the compromises to be made in such scenarios, in light of the 2021 HMS Defender incident between Russia and the United Kingdom.

Discussant:

Mr. Panagiotis Sergis, Policy & Legal Advisor at the Hellenic Navy
