ESRA ÜNAL

Esra Ünal holds a Ph.D. (in international law) from the University of Strasbourg. Her Ph.D. thesis, which she successfully defended in December 2021, focuses on the relationship between the Treaty of Lausanne and the European Convention on Human Rights and was under the supervision of Professor Photini Pazartzis (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) and Professor Dr. Syméon Karagiannis (University of Strasbourg). During her doctoral studies, she taught public international law and participated in the Public International Law Section of the Hague Academy of International Law and was selected for the Directed Studies of the Academy.

Esra holds an M.A. from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (I.K.Y. Scholar) and, an LL.B. (high honors) and a B.A. (double major) in International Relations from Istanbul Bilgi University. She participated in exchange programs with Saint-Louis University - Brussels and Han Yang University in South Korea and, the attended Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Washington D.C. as a member of the winner team of national rounds.

In the past, Esra worked at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg and examined applications to the Court; assisted in the preparation of Chamber cases and delivered trainings to lawyers, prosecutors and judges. Before working at the Court, Esra had an internship with the Council of Europe Project Office in Ankara and the Permanent Mission of Turkey to the United Nation in New York. Esra is also an attorney-at-law, registered at Istanbul Bar Association and, has experience at leading law firms in Turkey.

Her research includes public international law and international dispute settlement, especially international arbitration, law of treaties, State responsibility, and international human rights.

Esra is fluent in Turkish (native speaker), English and Greek; and conversational in French and German.
