IAKOVOS IAKOVIDIS

Dr. Iakovos Iakovidis holds a bachelor degree (Maitrise) on European and International Law from the University Paris II (Panthéon-Assas), and a master’s degree (DEA) on Public International Law and International Organisations from the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne). His PhD thesis in the University of Athens dealt with the conflict between imperative (jus cogens) rules and immunities of state officials. As a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute and the Robert Schumann Centre for Advanced Studies in Florence (2017-2019), he explored the increasing impact of religion to international relations after 9/11. 

Dr. Iakovidis is the Deputy Permanent Representative of Greece to the Office of United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva. A senior Greek diplomat with extensive negotiating experience, Iakovos has served in many multilateral diplomacy hubs, such as Brussels, New York and Geneva. After starting his career in Beijing, Iakovos was posted in the Permanent Mission of Greece to the European Union where he acquired a wide knowledge of the European institutions interaction and law making processes. 

In New York, as a Third Committee delegate, Iakovos negotiated on behalf of the EU numerous human rights and social issues resolutions (among which on women’s rights, human trafficking, return of cultural property and the Olympic Truce) and he initiated the groundbreaking UNGA Resolution 163/68 on the safety of journalists and the issue of impunity. His main academic focus is on international human rights law, as well as the interaction between public international law and diplomacy, other research interests including state immunities, diplomatic law and the peaceful settlement of cyber disputes.
